The success of Colgin Cellars stems from a passion for ultra-premium fine wine, limited production, and exclusive allocations to a small number of loyal wine enthusiasts.
Colgin Cellars was founded in 1992 by fine art dealer Ann Colgin. Among one of the younger wineries in the Napa Valley, Colgin Cellars established a reputation for producing world-class wines at a very early age. They source fruit from a variety of exceptional vineyards, proven year after year.
Tychson Vineyard
The Tychson Vineyard was initially planted in 1881 by the first female vintner in the Napa Valley, Josephine Tychson, and removed during the prohibition era. Ann Colgin has set out to restore the allocations since 1997 and has since planted the property with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The vineyard is a rocky, east-facing slope rich with volcanic soil. The rare Aiken very stony loam soil accentuates bold floral and earthy notes in the wines out of this vineyard.
Many vintages of Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill Vineyard have received a 100-point rating from professional wine critics, including 2015, 2013, 2012, and 2002. Check out this rating from Wine Advocates Robert Parker on the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill:
“Opaque purple, with blueberry and blackberry fruit, a hint of incense and subtle toast, the wine has great intensity, incredible richness and, again, a floral blue- and black-fruited nose and flavor profile that is remarkable. The finish goes on for close to a minute. This is slightly more tightly knit than the more ostentatious 2012, but both are wines to taste and drink before you die!” -Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
Cariad Vineyards
The Cariad vineyard is located south of the Tychson Vineyard, overlooking Napa Valley’s rocky hillsides. The name ‘Cariad’ comes from the Welsh word love, a sincere ode to the remarkable vineyard. This vineyard often expresses notes of violet, dark fruit, gravel, and minerality, which evolve into lingering tobacco and spice notes with age. The 2012, 2007, and 2005 vintages of Colgin Cariad have all received a 100-point rating by critic Robert Parker. Here’s what Robert Parker had to say about the Colgin Cariad Proprietary Red 2010.
“The 2010 Proprietary Red Cariad reveals great intensity along with abundant notes of unsmoked tobacco leaf interwoven with blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit, charcoal and coffee bean nuances as well as a Pauillac-like lead pencil shaving character. This blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 14% Cabernet Franc is one of the finest wines I tasted over the 12 days I spent tasting in Napa Valley in late August and early September. This remarkable 2010 should drink beautifully for 20 or more years.” -Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
IX Estate
The IX Vineyard consists of 20-acres, located in the eastern hills overlooking the Oakville AVA. The estate is located much higher than Colgins other vineyards, sitting above Lake Hennesy at elevation levels ranging from 1150-1350 feet above sea level. This praised land has been deemed by Robert Parker “as close to a viticultural nirvana as I’ve ever seen,” and is blessed with an ideal climate and rocky, volcanic soils. 100-point vintages from the IX Vineyard include 2016, 2015, 2013, 2007, and 2006. Check out this review of the Colgin IX Estate Proprietary Red 2006.
“It, too, reveals the noble sweetness of tannin, the extraordinary rich, intense mouthfeel, and sumptuous aromas of flowers, burning embers, blackberries, blueberries, spice box, and cedar. With extraordinary intensity, beautiful purity, a texture and flavors that build incrementally on the palate, and a significantly long finish, this is a perfect wine.” -Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
An Excellent Return On Investment
Colgin Cellars’ strategy is quite unique amongst the majority of wineries. The winery opts out of mass retail distribution and chooses to only sell to a select number of restaurants, and a lucky 8,000 people on its mailing list. To make matters rarer, those fortunate few on the mailing list are limited to no more than three or six bottles upon each release!
The wineries’ small distribution, paired with numerous high-scoring vintages, ignites the perfect recipe for collectors seeking investment! When purchased directly from the mailing list Colgin wines are priced at around $300 a bottle, but almost instantly increase to prices upwards of $600 in after-market sales. These bottles can age beautifully for 20 years or more, increasing the value with each year and making the lifetime of the investment bound for upward growth.
Collectors who are looking to maximize their returns on wines from Colgin Cellars, but find themselves without a place on the exclusive mailing list are still able to do so with 24-hour access to our cellar online.
