The Secret Class of Chambolle Musigny

The village of Chambolle-Musigny features two Grand Cru level vineyards: Le Musigny and Bonnes Mares. Both vineyards are at the opposite ends of the village appellation – Le Musigny borders the village of Vougeot, and Bonnes Mares borders (and overlaps) the village of Morey-St.-Denis. This difference of geography is reflected in the wines, as Le Musigny is often thought to feature a softer, more elegant style of Grand Cru-power than the bold, rich, and slightly wild profile of Bonnes Mares.

Both vineyards are famous for their individual characters, and rightly so – which makes them expensive. There is a way to access their respective styles, however, without necessarily breaking the bank. Both Le Musigny and Bonnes Mares are surrounded by outstanding Premier Cru vineyards and a small number of adjacent Village-level plots. We have sorted these out for you, listing below our stock of wines that come from vineyards adjacent to each of these Grand Cru superstars.

There is a bit more to know here. Only three adjacent vineyards are not Premier Cru: These are Chambolle-Musigny Les Argilleres (adjacent to Le Musigny), plus Morey-St.-Denis Les Veroilles, and Morey-St.-Denis En La Rue de Vergy (both adjacent to Bonnes Mares). We have naturally included wines from the Premier Cru Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses – a vineyard site adjacent to Le Musigny that some believe should be elevated to Grand Cru level (I tend to agree – it’s one of my favorite vineyards in all of Burgundy). Since this vineyard is so special, we chose to also include the Premier Cru site Chambolle-Musigny Les Haut Doix, because it is adjacent to Les Amoureuses and offers outstanding value. For a similar reason, we chose to include Morey-St.-Denis La Bussiere, neighbor of Morey-St.-Denis La Ruchotte (which is adjacent to Bonnes Mares) and, like Les Amoureuses, famous in its own right. Finally, I wanted to point out that several of these wines hail from the villages of Vougeot and Morey-St.-Denis, but the specific vineyard sites listed are still adjacent to Le Musigny or Bonnes Mares.

We listed the rest of our Chambolle-Musigny stock, including Le Musigny and Bonnes Mares, so you can select from other outstanding wines in the same neighborhood.

This wraps up our “class” on Chambolle-Musigny. Now, you can dive into the CLASS of Chambolle-Musigny – selected for you here at Benchmark Wine Group.
